CHTV saying Goodbye?

CHTV is a community site but gets no help from the community. I believe it is simply a place to leech demos. Weeks go by now before demos are posted, it seems no one cares anymore. CHTV is now a dinosaur. I have went thru 10 coders who have all promised to help but end up dropping CHTV before the project is finished. I am tired of this bullshit.

I tried to update the site to keep up with the times, I tried to make CHTV simpler to use with more functionality, I have more ideas than I can count and without help from you it can not be done.

Leech all the demos you can now boys and girls because CHTV may be saying goodbye very soon.

I care, would it be too much trouble to keep it alive in its deficient neglected state?

Yes

It's summer break.... no wonder there are no demos getting added

#4 !phil on 2010-07-13 14:00:12

I feel like I should defend myself. I did not drop CHTV, I was expelled from it by DonKing. Me and Xalon did quite a big job overhauling the site -- for free and on our free time. DonKing, with all due respect, I think you are as much a part of the problem as anyone else. If you don't want to host it, someone else will.

#5 !phil on 2010-07-13 14:00:41

Did I say Xalon? I meant to say Xantom. Mmm... coffee...

#6 !phil on 2010-07-13 14:03:51

And to be fair, by design, that is what CHTV is - a place to leech demos. The Challenge network was a modular network of sites, CH-XYZ for this, CH-ABC for that, CHTV is dedicated for demos. News, community, whatever, goes elsewhere, so that's why it is not like esreality or quakeworld.ru or cyberfight.ru (other sites with demo repositories)

#7 !phil on 2010-07-13 14:05:41

Here's one suggestion: Dump the demos (QW+Q3+whatever)/database content onto a bunch of DVDs and sell them as a CHTV demopack - sell for 100 dollars. I guarantee you there will be at least one buyer :)

phil, I have always acknowledged people that have helped in the past. You along with everyone else has never finished the job to completion. CHTV is not a leech site, it never was and never will be. It can be so much more with the communities support.

#9 !phil on 2010-07-14 15:57:52

I got a lot more shit done (with Xantom's help) than anyone else recently. And that's despite the fact that you were never even a driving force to motivate us. Your half hearted attempts at tracking priorities made me realise that you have no idea how to get people to work with you. I mean, I had to force you to make tasks lists. You should wonder *why* it is that noone ever got anything done. Are they really all lazy bastards, or is there some actual input required on your side, beyond sending one email out a month with some vague bullet points? So please, don't even go there.

Site tagline is "your source for esport multimedia". Sounds like a 'leech site' to me :) As for lack of community input, I got frustrated a year or so back when the site was redesigned but you couldn't even register properly (it wouldn't send out an email, something like that). chtv was a great idea, building on your old demosite (can't remember the name, oldskull quake or something?). But with the demise of the challenge network, maybe it's day has been and gone.

phil, i'm not gonna get into this soap opera bullshit with you. It's true I did not hold your hand thru the whole process. It's true I did not make sure you finished what you started. My bad for not treating you like a child and wiping your ass for you. HangTime, you are correct, Quakeworld and CPM demos are a thing of the past, there are still a few people left that enjoy the demos but not enough to justify the resources. I cannot keep using up the sponsors bandwidth and space for a nearly dead site. "your source for esport multimedia" was meant as more than demos, a lot more. It obviously never did happen. P.S. yes, Old Skull Quake.

I'm not the CHTV project manager. I'm just not. All that aside, consider post #7

If I really thought that people would buy such DVD's I would do that and possibly hire a coder and designer.

what else other than demos are you thinking about? for me since i first was here it has always been just a demo site. But I dont see anything wrong with that? It is also the ONLY demo site, so would be bad if you had to shut it down :( I agree though the activity here has problably died down a little. Now it is summer though so it is alot more inactive i guess.

razor. I want to expand the demo sections to include many other games. Yeah I can add them myself but I do not want to do that. I want the players to upload themselves. I believe I can encourage people to do so once a good system and design is in place. I have a coder currently redoing the backend from scratch. This backend has been Frankensteined for 10 years now... some of Greyseers original code is still in there. I have a tremendous amount of ideas. CHTV's main purpose is for users to upload and download demos, that will never change. I only want to make this process simpler.

#16 Zalon on 2010-07-18 02:39:02

If you ever decide to shut down chtv, please don't let all our history go to waste and let someone take over the demo archive. I wouldn't mind hosting the demos, as I don't have a problem "wasting" my sponsors bandwith :D

Zalon. I know you wouldnt have a problem. You also code and can make additions at will. You also have a site that accommodates demos. I do not want just a demo site. Perhaps one day CHTV will be what I want it to be. Although CHTV will still support the QW and CPMa communities, it WILL expand to many more games and media formats.

How about hosting more challenges like the Milton - Reppie thingie some time ago? The first (and only?) CHTV-challenge, and it got a lot of attention. Obviously much because it contained what most people recognized as the two best duelers in QW at that time, but also because it was scheduled some time in advance, had commentators, loads of spectators. Think stuff like that are vital if you want to make this into a community of its own. Maybe something like a monthly challenge? Don't have to be duels either of course. 2on2/4on4 "dream teams" clashing it out could also be a great watch for sure. Nice to see you followed up Phils idea btw, with less pricey DVD :-)

#20 Rikoll on 2010-07-29 13:07:03

Also closer cooperation with the communities that actually use this site a lot, like qw.nu / whatever CPMa / Q2 / Q3 sites that are active. If some challenge were hosted here, have some news writer on the specific community site write a news article about it on their respective site with a link to the article on this site.

site went downhill after you yanked my column off the site... i was giving the ethnic panache this place needed k...furthermore i think when you stopped hosting challenges with the sexy prizes like 3000 laptops and the itg radio personalities like trillian wheat and blankz... people kinda took that as a sign that the game died and in turn stopped posting their meaningless demos cause no one cared..

Well it doesn't make much sense to complain about the lack of demos from other games here if this is mainly used by QW players. As a QW player I can only supply QW demos and I have tried to upload all our league games in recent years. I don't really know what more can you ask? I don't play in the summer so no demos during that time.

I actually agree with Devious here. The Challenges tournaments back in CPM were almost the center of Quake 3 for a while. If you're not doing that, there's probably nothing else that will generate the same level of interest. Go with what worked. CH-TV is cool but having a single place to download demos isn't as much of a requirement anymore since bandwidth is cheaper and more widespread. In my opinion if you really wanted to bring CH-TV up to date it should be possible to just view the game on CH-TV without downloading anything. Like Youtube. So in summary, I think to bring the site back to it's heyday: 1) Host Challenges tournaments in QW, CPM, and maybe QL. Stick to where CH-TV was historically was strong at first. Get good shoutcasters, make sure games are properly advertised and at a standard time standard time like 8 or 10pm so people can actually watch. If it's a NA tournament, maybe have it a couple hours earlier so Europeans can watch more easily. 2) Have video replays so no downloading is required, but leave the option for downloads for those who want it there.

DonKing. There are a lot of demos that are not available currently, that were available for the last 5 years or so, are they permanently lost or are they being moved? Because they haven't worked for me for a while and I've tried many times to download them. Just wondering, because if they've been deleted or lost it's a huge shame =] x

For ET the new ETTV on Demand at Gamestv.org might have something to do with the lack of downloads since people now have the option to play entire matches back direct from a server from everyone's point of view and not just one person. If this site dies I hope you don't just delete all the demos because there are old ones that should still mean something to those who want to look back at old teams/matches. At least send them to people who can keep them online someway.

BTW the old site was good enough. It was a lot simpler to use than this one except the comments would repeatedly post unless you refreshed right after you posted.
