SoD! Interview (2001)

SoD!
Interview Conducted By: xhrl on 12/17/2001

xhrl: So sod do you ever like to play tdm at all now like when you were with wfb in SD2 or are you exclusively into duelling these days? Does team play bother you because you are not totally responsible for the team performance?
SoD!: Yes, of course, I like and want to play more TDM. In sd3 I played for divines but I didn't have "enough" time to get my teamplay skills to the level that was needed for me to be effective =(. We lost against the slackers in the quarterfinals in three very close games.

xhrl: In chatting with you in the past, you mentioned to me that you use an extremely sensitive shaft setting? How long did it take you to get used to shafting with that sensitivity? Do you use dinput or any form of acceleration to get yourself flying so fast?
SoD!: Well, I started playing quake in 1998 with like 50 in sensitivity. I had a modem (as did everybody else) so low sensitivity was not that important because the lag made it impossible for high performance aiming. As time went on, I slowly lowered my sens. Now i'm down to 7.25 and i will probably not go much further. There are some things you must think about before you set your sens. If you have too high a sens, you can make fast turns and will have some advantages in closecombat but in shaft and longrange shooting you probably will get out-aimed. Whith low sens you have advantages in longcombats/shafting but dissadvantages in close "rl" combat. I have taken my own way, testing different sensitivities; and while qw just gets faster and faster, I think a higher sens will be an advantage at least on dm4. With mouseacceleration you might have lower sens but I haven't really tested it as I do not use dinput:)

xhrl: I would like to know if you have a nemesis, someone who can trip you up or make you alter the way you play quite consistently?
SoD!: This is a tough question. Pietro is good..and trinidy, too.

xhrl: What QW client do you use, e.g., quakeforge or zquake or glqwcl? Do you think any client has advantages over other clients? Are you into the fakeshaft of mqwcl? Have you heard anything about the new QW client Paradoks says Strider of the UK is presently working on; apparently it will play qwz and mvd demos from any POV?
SoD!: Personally I use glmqwcl. I do dislike the fakeshaft, but it's the only thing in mqwc (what i've found) I don't like. Btw, the demoplayer in qizmo is better, though. About the new qw client of strider's i'm lost=), as I haven't even heard about it, though it sounds very groovy.

xhrl: It has been said to me that you have to have very precise aim as well as precise, speedy movement to succeed on dm4 at the top competitive level. Do you agree entirely with this account of life on dm4 or would you place more emphasis on tactics?
SoD!: As in every duel, one's aim is a VERY important weapon. By using fast attacks and smart prediction shots you will get far on dm4. But the most important thing is to make your opponent to make mistakes; e.g., get low on ammo. I always COUNT his ammo, that is the main thing you should keep in mind and adjust your tactics or strategy to it.

xhrl: What is your general strategy when you play dm4 ? Do you have a favourite way of attacking your opponent on dm4?
SoD!: Having control on middle area is my general strategy, as it's hard to attack it from +100 and RA, and you usually get a lot of spawnsfrags if you kill your opponent. As for my favourite attack, actually I don't really know, though some frags you wait patiently for can be satisfying.

xhrl: In watching your games versus Griffin on dm4, I noticed your tendency to hold the RA area by spamming away with the boomstick. Could you please explain to me why you do this and why you think it is effective?
SoD!: I needed to hold my visual focus on the "ya" so that I could move quickly out from the RA if i saw griffin coming. By shooting on the wall I always held my "focus on the top". I was really nervous in that game..so shooting on the wall allowed me to put all my focus on any visible movements.....You see, it's easy to make escapes from a couple of grenades if you hear noises from around the ya...

xhrl: That tie game versus Griffin on dm6 was one of the most exciting and tense dm6 matches I have ever seen. Do you think that dm6 is a map that is as well suited to your style as dm4 is? By the way I would love to see def or paradoks against you on dm6.....have you ever played either of these guys on dm6 or dm4?
SoD!: Dm6 is not that bad for me, but I must be more passive on dm6, because it is easier to make ambushes on dm6 then dm4(it's a bigger map). There's not much you can do in a fight if the opponent gets to hit a lot of prediction shots=) I haven't played def yet I dont think... I have played against paradoks but it was a long time ago. It would be fun to faceoff against paradoks on dm6 @qhlan3

xhrl: For the cottelan, how often were you practising before the tournament? Was your confidence high going into the tournament or did it build as you started taking down your opponents?
SoD!: Yeah, it was a really tough field of players (these were the players I faced before the final in order: winnie, nikita, interceptor, skalman, cyruz, nikodemus).. I had some confidence before cottelan (atleast on dm4) but further I came in the tournament I got more and more confident and after the first final game I realized ooh, god!, maybe I can win this tournament!!?

xhrl: You are definitely one of the finest dm4 duellers and some would argue that you are the finest. Who would you say are the toughest opponents that you have faced on dm4 and why were they challenging?
SoD!: It's hard to say "this is the best dm4 player i've played against" but I think Winnie, nikodemus, griffin are really skilled dm4 players (in tournaments). On internet (games) it's hard to say how good you are...it's a lot different than in tournaments.

xhrl: Do you have any plans to play in any upcoming tourneys at all?
SoD!: Ofcourse, sd4 and tournaments @ qhlan3

xhrl: What are your thoughts on the scripting controversy...what is alright and what is not in your view?
SoD!: A lot of people will probably hate me now for saying this, but I think almost all scripts should be forbidden (except a "changing weapon script" like "ng-sng-shaft"); it would be more fun and skillful if players made fast forward jumps manually with solid precision.

xhrl: Do have a favourite demo without you in it?
SoD!: I like sectopod vs cataclysm dm6 and pietro(ff) vs cmf on dm2. Both are good matches.

xhrl: Why do you think it is that the unrealistic physics of QW actually affords players more opportunities to extend the gameplay? When did you start playing QW and at what point did you start flying around dm4 at a full bunnyhop?
SoD!: QW is the ultimate game, it's always evolving......you can always get better; I started to play quake in 1998 and when I started to bunny jump my tactical execution improved a lot.

xhrl: Do you think the play of QW will continue to see gameplay innovations?
SoD!: I have no doubt about that!

xhrl: Is there a player in QW's past or present that you feel has influenced how you play?
SoD!: Sectopod, Lakerman and pietro

xhrl: There is one guy I know who would really like to see you in a duel versus dag. Do you think you will ever play him before you stop playing QW?
SoD!: It would be really a pity if we didn't, it would be a fun game to watch :)

xhrl: Well SoD what sort of CPU and system specifications do you play QW on? Do you play other games at all? If so, do they contribute to your QW skills at all?
SoD!: My system is: p2 450, with voodoo3000, glquake@640*480*16. I don't play any other games really, well more or less; qw is it.

xhrl: Besides playing QW SoD, do you like to read or do any outdoor activities?
SoD!: I like to read a lot and at present I have started athletic training. In summer I like to go out fly fishing and in winter....well, it must be skiing!

xhrl: One last question SoD!, tell me how you chose your nick name.
SoD!: I had read about MOD (in Hackers) and one of the people in hackers was called Zod so i modified it to SoD and added the "!" just to make my nickname look a bit longer =)

xhrl: Well SoD! I would like to thank you for taking the time to talk with CHTV. Is there anything you would like to say to all the dudes and dudettes out there who will be reading this?
SoD!: np m8; To all of you quakers!, don't stop playing quake!!
