| Psylex: Hello! Well, as usual the first question is always "who are you?" :) |
Malice: Hmmm, I'm guessing you probably said my name somewhere already, but I'm Malice, formerly of clan ease. Member of the Village Challenge 2 Victorian Side June 99. Member of Smegged team Dec 99
| Psylex: How long have you been playing first person shooters for, and how did you start? |
Malice: Hmm, can't remember back when I started exactly. Probably since the start of 1997, maybe a bit earlier. It was before Quakeworld was around anyway :)
| Psylex: How did you first start playing quake? Who introduced you? |
Malice: I introduced myself, back on my Pentium 133 with my 28k modem after I pirate.... err, bought the game.
| Psylex: How did you become such an awesome gamer? Are there certain things that you do and other players dont? |
Malice: I guess I was lucky, and I started back when things were all starting. But then again starting now you can watch demo's of the already skilled players and pick things up quickly. I guess the most important thing to do is to think during the game. This can take a bit of time, since you have to first develop your skills then develop your strategy, do things differently to everyone else, and it will surprise people.
| Psylex: Sometimes it seems as if I'm not improving, but I see players advance in skills all around me. How do I improve? |
Malice: Most likely the people around you are playing more. There is such a thing as raw talent, however it's quite rare. More than likely they're just practicing more than you. The best thing to do is just to play.. don't care what anyone thinks, don't see an unnamed and be afraid of them, just play them and get in the practice.
| Psylex: If you had to define yourself, as a player, what is your approach to gaming and what are some of your strengths as a player? |
Malice: Probably my strengths are that I don't have to practice a great deal to keep my performance up. My best strengths as a player are in crowded situations and timing and usage of Quad.
| Psylex: Are you a natural player or do you practise? |
Malice: I tend to be a bit of both, I am able to go for long periods without practice and play well, however to step up to the next level, I do need practice.
| Psylex: How do you practise your aim? |
Malice: Practice aim? I just usually fire at shit and hope it kills stuff.
| Psylex: Do practice on any bots? |
Malice: Nah, those bots are dumbasses, they always fall for the same shit.
| Psylex: How do you decide on strategy and tactics to use in a match? |
Malice: Depends on the player. Rushing player such as Reload I'll always sit back and try to slow the game down to upset their style. Slower player I'll usually annoy till they get impatient.
| Psylex: Whats your opinion on Quake3? Do you have fun playing it? |
Malice: I find Quake3 to be far too slow for my liking. I like the speed of Quake1, now with the machines so powerful compared to what they are before, it makes for an incredibly smooth game, and most people can't complain that their machine is too slow... etc.
| Psylex: Have you tried Challenge-ProMode? |
Malice: Not as of yet, but I'm giving it a go soon.
| Psylex: I have seen clans rise and fall over there years, what do you contribute to the success of some of the more well known clans in the world? What makes a good clan? |
Malice: Probably the best clans are based on plain skill and not friendship. Being friends with the team is a necessity, however if your friend down the road has been playing Quake for a week, probably best not to let him in the clan :)
| Psylex: Can you name some of the toughest players you've played against? |
Malice: Probably the toughest players i've gone up against would have to be Reload, Mirage, Cinclant and Tim. Reload looks like he's rushing around not thinking, but if you look carefully at his game, you'll find a lot of very smart quick thinking. Cinclants all around knowledge of the game scares me, his strategic forsight fucks shit up :) Mirage because he can speed jump backwards around DM6. Tim because he makes the best of all the worst situations
| Psylex: Which players do you respect? |
Malice: Probably Cinclant. He knows more about Quake than anything.
| Psylex: You've competed at tournaments with high skills such as Smegged, how do you feel about your performance there? |
Malice: My performance was reasonable at the high levels. I was happy with my performance at Village 2 when I scared a few of the known players, like Reload and Mirage :)
| Psylex: Do you enjoy competing at this high level? |
Malice: I seem to play well at the higher level, however I don't like playing at this level cause everyone plays so differently.
| Psylex: Would you do it again? |
Malice: Yep, nothing beats owning Sydney drivers in their own town.
| Psylex: Why the hell did you "quit" QW? You were damn good :) |
Malice: I needed a break, at the time I was arguably in the best QW clan in Australia, and had achieved a hell of a lot. Unfortunately there is a lot of pressure on you once you get to this point, as soon as you enter a server, people bug you for games, if you have an off game and get beaten, you'll see screenshots all over the net the next day. Basically it got to the point where it wasn't as much fun as it used to be. But now quite a few people have forgotten me, I try to play at least a few hours a week on Eisa DM :)
| Psylex: What do you think of the current gaming scene? |
Malice: The current gaming scene in Victoria anyway seems to be booming. Shafted's better than ever :)
| Psylex: So what's the future for you? |
Malice: Ummm, I wanna try get back into the Quaking scene if possible. I miss the blood, the calls and the pr0n.
| Psylex: Since you work for Eisa, can you tell us WTF!@#@ is going there? :P |
Malice: From a technical standpoint it's a bit hard. Basically my main role at Eisa as well as doing University is Server Engineer. This includes looking after every server at eisa as well as the games servers. Unfortunately there are over 200 serves at eisa, which makes fucking around with games configs and the such very time consuming. I've tried to improve the gaming lately by ummm, let's just say doing some tricky IP handling to allow fast ping times as you've probably noticed. If anyone wants to put together some new rotations, configs etc... let me know, but for the time being however, I've gotta leave it in charge of a few employees over at eisa who know little of gaming :(
| Psylex: What are the specs of your computer? |
Malice: PIII 825mhz with 320mb RAM, TNT Ultra + Voodoo 2 and around 45 gig of drive space :)
| Psylex: Are you happy with its performance? |
Malice: Can't complain
| Psylex: When your not playing Quake, what do you like to do? |
Malice: Drive my MR2 and have sex with woman. Not those skanky ones that go to suburban night clubs either, those good looking ski bunny type ones :)
| Psylex: What advice would you like to give upcoming players? |
Malice: Don't dedicate your life to Quaking, get pissed, get slarts, do the normal shit.
| Psylex: Any tips on other things? |
| Malice: Don't eat ham from a strip joint. |
