| Chris: Name, Age, Location? |
KovaaK: Garrett Krutilla, 18, Pittsburgh, PA
| Chris: You are considered to be a very good NA dm4 player along with people like Bronx and FienD, why do you think North America has such a problem playing on dm4? |
KovaaK: I dont know, I always found it weird that for the longest time American dm'ers only played dm6, Aussies played dm2, and Euros played dm4. It seems that it has changed in the last year or so, there are good players of all levels on every continent now.
| Chris: What is your view on scripts? Do you consider scripts bad? Is it abusing qw's abilities? Just because qw is evolving do you feel that all of these new features are necessarily the best thing for QW? |
KovaaK: Scripts bad! Scripts are bringing nothing good into the game... just false skill. I hear rumors that in the next fuhquake smackdown ruleset, frj scripts are completely illegal to use, which will probably include cl_yawspeed changes, use of the rotate command, and the /kfjump alias.
| Chris: I agree 100% that rj scripts are lame. Often times a player who does not have the aim of his opponent has to use cunning movements, and skilled movement in general, if a speedy fwrj script is used, isn't that removing the skill required for that player to have an edge needed to match up with a better aiming opponent? Especially if the other opponent may not use scripts himself. In addition, most manual rj's allow for more control, but just not as quickly. |
KovaaK: Absolutely, it does remove a huge amount of skill.
| Chris: Keeping on the subject, do you feel that coming from cheapo/nfproxy/qizmo to full open source clients like MQWCL, QW 2.62, FUHQUAKE and others give people the false impression that there are no boundaries? That any command/feature to make the game easier is ok? What are some of the iffy features you see now in modern clients? |
KovaaK: I have yet to look into qw 2.62... but mqw and fuhquake through the use of -ruleset smackdown have been doing a good job of keeping the clients from having iffy features. Ofcourse since mqw isnt being updated, there are some hacks that still exist in it (I dont mean modified mqw either)... also, I think that cl_clock commands should be fully legal seeing as how any normal clock tapped to your moniter is legal.
| Chris: Concerning cl_truelightning/fakeshaft, simple question, okay or not ok? |
KovaaK: I was also talking to fuh about cl_fakeshaft (mqw) as compared to cl_truelightning... the qw lightning gun updates at 10 frames per second and they are considering moving the standard frames per second up to 125? I think they are forgetting the lightning gun, although that may be without reason seeing as how lg does so much damage in the game. About mqw\'s fakeshaft, it seemed to have a certain part of it the lg update at more fps at low values, it felt like 72 fps at fakeshaft settings of 0.22, fuh's (zquake's actually) cl_truelightning doesnt have that property, and isn't used nearly as much due to that. I wouldnt mind seeing some smoothing of the lightning gun added to the client (preferably leaving the part out that makes the lightning appear closer to the crosshair), but then again it may make the gun even stronger.
| Chris: The only thing I have ever wanted with the lightning gun was not the ability to fake it's position but to merely make the shaft look smooth as you move it. Some players will probably agree. Do you think the poll on cl_fakeshaft was fair, since it was later removed in mqw, I think it was version .94? |
KovaaK: It\'s questionable. It needs testing in a real environment to see if it would overpower the lightning gun or not.
| Chris: What do you think of the rotokiller mouse? Have you seen it in action? Know anyone who has tried it? Does it live up to the hype? I think the design looks utterly retarded but cool at the same time. |
KovaaK: I have only seen pictures of it. I question any mouse that tries to change the way people handle it, after the bullshit... er Boomslang it does look pretty weird :)
| Chris: Staying on the Mouse subject, which Mouse do you use? |
KovaaK: The Logitech mx300. It is unbeatable in how easy it is to control. I'd recommend this Mouse to anyone, I'd also recommend a large mousepad such as the CompUSA Supermat.
| Chris: I also use the mx300 and only bought it because it did not incorporate the 'mousemanish' design. I think when Mice Designers design a Mouse that they shouldn't try to make it conform to something that is as unique as someones hand, everyone is different, give people a basic Mouse and let people have at it. |
KovaaK: Absolutely true, the simple shape and small size allow for it to be very easily moved.
| Chris: On to the next question. and one that affects me because I am addicted to Quakeworld, and this has been asked on forums before i'm sure. Why is it that Quakeworld players are so hard to please? There is a vast majority of QW players out there that would have stuck with QW forever im sure if it had the userbase, why are we seeing so many cs clones, and more newbie friendly games, and not receiving the QW clone? |
KovaaK: I read your question on the forum a few weeks ago... it is a very hard question to answer. Games companies just dont feel like making FPS\'s that have such a hard learning curve. Ofcourse you could consider the fact that QW was a fluke, the movement is nothing like any game out there (unless it was from the qw engine ;) and the maps that people play for 1v1/teamplay ended up lasting a long amount of time as standards. The only reason I say long amount of time is cause dm2 is being phased out now by aerowalk, dm6 and aerowalk will be living on in 1v1 tourneys and teamplay will never veer away from dm3/dm2/e1m2, so I hope.
| Chris: A few more questions to end the interview. Are competition lans good for games? Championships for money? Should it indeed be like any physical sport or does this somehow hinder the other group who play it for fun? Have you seen people get out of hand over a tournament match or play the game far too long in terms of one sitting period? People have actually died from sitting at there computer so long! |
KovaaK: Competition in lans is always a great thing. some may see money involved in such an old game as being bad but I dont think so. Armageddon ran Genocide 5 and it attracted some people into playing the game, afterwards some ended up quitting, but the money wasn't why they quit. People who play the game for fun are rarely at the top of the game to compete in tournaments for money but of course there are a few exceptions, such as LocktaR. It's been a while since ive seen a tournament going on in qw but there seems to be a lot of requests for tournament, either 1v1 or 2v2, in the dm community a few weeks ago i saw bulldozer play a whopping 27 1v1's in a row (10 mins each) if I were him, I would have deleted my qw directory after all of that, and the people who die at their computers have mental disorders! Seriously, look at the people who died when playing Everquest, they were all social outcasts with many problems.
| Chris: Good points, I believe that things that attract people and therefore have a bigger userbase is always a good thing. Last question, who do you admire in general everyday activities (athlete, WHOEVER) And who do you admire at gaming/quake, it does not have to be for achievements? |
KovaaK: General everyday activities? I\'d have to say my Father, he manages to wake up at 3am every weekday to go to work and never bitches about it and for quake, OBVIOUSLY it is yogic, his skill is unsurpassed. yogic > def on even pings at every map... yogic > me on even pings at every map if yogic had a 13 ping in europe he would take Duelmania without losing a single map, there is no question about it
| Chris: Thanks for the interview! |
| KovaaK: np, it was fun :P |
Memories! ;o
