iCE cLIMBERS from Sweden
Hi. Could you please state your names, ages and nicks plus known aliases.
Fredrik "ic-GOPHER" Quick, 19
Johan "ic-TOXIC" Quick, 17
Christian "ic-PANICORE" Johansson, 19
Jonas "ic-PHANTOM" Forsstrm, 20
What is your history in gaming personally and together?
Well, it all started with gopher and toxic starting playing Quake in April 1996, a bit later gopher got to know panicore by a neighbour who knew him. Some months later gophers father told that someone on his job knew a "excellent" player that would whoop gophers ass easy. So gophers father got phantom's phone number and gopher phoned him and asked him to play a 33.6 modem duel :). It all ended up with all of us LANning like every week for about a year, we made a clan which held for about 2 days, then we made a new, and a new, and a new, and so on. One day we decided to try to create a little bit more serious clan which perhaps could hold together for a long time, and so we did. We started playing online together when we were kinda lucky to get the oportunity to play from a 34 mbit connection. We played Quake for about 4 years all together and then in january 2000 decided to move on, and switched to Quake III. Yes we tried Quake II when it came out, but since it sucked so badly we just played it for a month or so and then went back to QW. Guess thats the history about ic.ic-GOPHER: I started playing games really early, my father got our first PC when I was 1 year old, so I'm kinda grown up with a computer by my side :) When I was four years old me and my little brother toxic got our first NES 8-bit, later it was SNES. After playing a lot of SNES i got bored of console games and started playing more PC games, and of course some of the favourites were Duke Nukem 3d and Doom II. The first game i started playing "seriously" was Quake, which i played for about 4 years, and today Ive played Quake III since January 2000.
ic-PANICORE: Hmm... It all started with my older brother who got the first laptop available ever and like the little curious kid I was I couldn't resist to test this new 'toy'. The first game I played was cats, a game which's goal was to eat as many mice as possible. Since I played too much on my brother's computer he became angry that I occupied it, so he hid it so I couldn't play. Since I was about 4-5 years old I became sad and thus got my own computer later so I could play games as much as I wanted. Later on I got a NES 8-bit where of course Ice Climber came with (one of my favourite games). Later when I was 9 years old I started to play computers games again, and my dear brother had become somewhat of a computer-geek and my own interest in games had started to grow more and more so I simply copied my brother's games. Games like Doom was amazing since you could play against each other, so my family's new interest was to gib each others in Doom. It continued with Doom2, Rise of the Triads and Duke Nukem 3D. One day my brother showed me Quake Beta. At this time noone had played a full 3D game before so everyone was amazed. But after 5 months of constant playing my brother got bored of it and stopped playing. This is where I picked it up as I tried it over the internet with a 33.6 kpbs modem. It was a bit difficult to play with 200 ping but I still played it because it was so fun. Later in school someone asked my buddy if I wanted to be on a LAN where everyone played Quake. And there I met gopher and toxic for the first time. The LANs continued and we kept forming different clans with toxic and gopher. Finally we decided to form iCE cLIMBERS (PaniCore, Gopher, Toxic and Gagge). With this new clan we decided to play on the internet against other clans. And so it has continued till now.
ic-TOXIC: Similar story to gopher as they're brothers. Only difference is that he started playing at the age of 11 years instead of 13.
ic-PHANTOM: Summer 1996 my brother's friend had vacation so they sat at his place and played on LAN with 5-8 computers. I got to borrow one of their computers to play Duke Nukem, Blood and Quake. Quake was what got me hooked the most. I had no computer myself at this time so I wished one for my birthday. I started practising against bots at home as they had stopped LANning (the dude who lived there had come home from his vacation). After a while I started to play over the net with my 33.6 modem :]. I trained a lot during the summer and when the school started. We started to LAN again and now it was me who kicked them :]. Tobbe, the name of my brother's friend, told me that his boss' sons played Quake and was good. I got in contact with gopher over the net and we played some 1on1's. Gopher kicked my but on dm4 and dm6 but on dm2 it was more even. He asked me if I wanted to play on a LAN he was attending and I said yes. On the LAN it was much easier with 13 in ping instead of 213 :]. I got to join their clan and we played LAN almost every weekend. After many years of playing I switched from Quake to Quake3. Summer 1999 we got ourselves a 34 MBits leased line and played a lot of 4on4's there. After a while we got sponsored by Nine Norrkping and played in their studio. Gopher, Panicore and Toxic went over to e9 and I was promised a place. But after a lot of trouble and weird things happening it was full and I couldn't join. I started to LAN with United, at the time named NG. Then Gopher, Panicore and Toxic left e9 and we restarted ic again and now we're here today.
What does ic stand for and why did you chose it as a clan name?
ic stands for iCE cLIMBERS. We got it from the old NES 8-bit game Ice Climber. The reason for why we choosed the name was that we wanted to honor this GREAT game :)
What is ic's history?
Hmm, long and wierd history :) Ok, here we go... As we told earlier we were playing from our 34 mbit connection, we played there for about one year, but then we lost it and had to find a new place to play from. This was much more harder than we expected, but after a while we were asked by the Nine Netcaf in Norrkping to play for them as NN (Nine Norrkping), so we accepted this and started playing there. We played as NN for about 2-3 months and then some stuff happened, and at the same time we got an opportunity to get back to our 34 mbit, so we decided to leave the sponsorship and start playing by ourselves again. We played at the 34 mbit place for about one more year but then we lost it forever :( One day, e9-mo phoned us and asked if gopher and panicore wanted to travel to the Frag4, Dallas to play with them, and who says no to such an offer? :) So, gopher and panicore went to the Frag4 and e9 placed on a 3:rd place after cK and Revolution. During the competition gopher and panicore decided to join up with e9 since iCE cLIMBERS had nowhere to play from anyways. Some days later also toxic joined up, and phantom was kinda promised to be able to join up later. Though, phantom wasnt allowed to join up, due too that e9 had like 9999999 members, this wasnt a good thing for us, since we didnt wanna leave phantom outside. After a while, all the democrazy in e9 disappered and some people was deciding everything (no names). This was the beginning of our disliking in playing with e9, the Nine Netcaf had nothing to do with this, its a really great place. Anyways, after a while it was enough and we left e9 to reform our old clan iCE cLIMBERS. This time we really put some power in getting a new place to play from and after a while we found the place which we play from right now, and 10 mbit! Thats the history about ic-NN-ic-e9-ic :P
In your match vs Allstars we all expected the games to be close. On q3dm6tmp you totally dominated them though. What happened?
Well, its not too much to say about this game, but we managed to get our FFA tp style to work perfect, and got a really nice lockup on them after a while. Having all the weapons in combination with having good control of RA and Quad made it almost impossible for them to get out of our spawnraping ;)
How much do you practice together and with whom?
It depends really much, some weeks we can play like 20 practice games, and other we prac like 0. We practice against every clan that wanna practice against us, just ask us :)
What's your computer setups? Mice, headphones, cpus and memory.
ic-GOPHER: p3-550, 128 ram, Geforce2 GTS 32 mb, Logitech Pilot Mouse 3-button (the oldest one of them), Sony CD770 headphones.ic-PANICORE: p4-1500, 128 ram, Geforce3 GTS 64 mb, Microsoft Trekker Mouse 2-button/scroll, Sennheiser HDxxx headphones.
ic-PHANTOM: p2-350, 192 ram, Geforce DDR 32 mb, A4tech (made in taiwan, costs like $4 :P), noname headphones.
ic-TOXIC: p3-500, 128 ram, Geforce SDR 32 mb, Logitech Pilot Mouse 3-button (the oldest one of them), Sennheiser HD500 headphones.
The best Quake game is? And why?
Quake III for now, since you got a little bit bored of QW after 4 years, but its one of the best games!ic quake games "diagram"
Quake ---------------------------------
Quake2 --
Quake3 ----------------------------------
How would you describe each other's playing style?
Aggressive like hell :)
There's not much show of you in the 1on1 scene. Do you find q3 duelling exceedingly boring just like me?;) Or is there another reason?
Thats because 1on1 suck if you dont have time to jump around on localhost 8 hours a day and practice movement. And we dont have that time, and besides TDM is so much more fun than 1on1.
Why is there only 5 persons in the clan?
Why have more members? Four players playing and a coach, thats all you need. Having alot of members just makes the clan get less tp.

There's a huge interest sparked in both Europe and Northern America in Q3CTF. Any chance you will try it out and play in it competively as a clan or in other clans?
Well, we dont find CTF especially interesting, not enough to play it as ic. Panicore plays some CTF with WR and the Swedish national team though :)
The interest in Challenge Promode (now called Challenge Promode Arena - CPMA for short) has also increased with the Clash of the Titans tournament in USA/Canada. Any interest in this? Have you tried it?
We have tried it, uRk. (Panicore said after having played it in the CPMA Allstars event arranged by QuakeNation that it was different from what he had expected and was quite fun actually. He still fancied Vanilla Q3 TDM over CPMA TDM.)
Who do you 'have most respect for'/'fear most' in EC3 and who do you think will win?
I think our toughest opponent down there will be aNc.de, theyve showed some great skills and tp. We dont know enough about the other teams like c58 and Cx, but we guess theyll give us some hard games too. Allstars will also be a huge threat since theyll give 110% to get revenge on us :)iCE cLIMBERS will win the EuroCup3, OF COURSE! :P Nah, just kiddin but atleast we hope so, and well give 200% for it.
Greatest moment in quake?
There are many "greatest moments". Of course it was a great moment to beat Clan9 29-6 in games on LAN, beating Allstars in the group final wasnt to bad either :) And of course, reaching the lan finals by beating the Vikings.
Anything you want to add?
Hmm, lets get together and KILL counterstrike? :)
