Fatal1ty Interview (2000)

Fatal1ty
Interview Conducted By: WarMachine on 11/14/2000

WarMachine: First of all, congratulations on being dubbed the Number 1 Quake3 player in the world. Who do you believe poses the biggest threat to you individually and on the clan scene?
Fatal1ty: I'm not really sure who would poses the biggest threat towards me in 1on1. I'm kind of just out there and the next tournament that will really tell who's better will be at Babbages this December.

WarMachine: So who has been your best rival to date?
Fatal1ty: Clan wise, I believe the Russian Team and 9 EU are great forces and hopefully we'll have a chance to play them in teamplay to have the recognition of being the best Team in the World.

WarMachine: What about individually, is it hard to keep up with all the new "pro" gamers?
Fatal1ty: I'm not sure who I would consider to be my best rival. I have only played certain players a couple of times and if I only played them once, it's because they got knocked out earlier in the tournament before I got to the finals. So right now I still feel that I'm on top, and with Babbages coming up this December, there will be a lot of bragging rights to who wins that event as everyone will be there.

WarMachine: Will you maintain your focus on Q3A, or will you be prepared for a game change in the future?
Fatal1ty: I'm currently focusing primarly on Q3A until Doom3 comes out. I do plan to switch to a different game in the future if need be. If we do not change to Doom3 and Quake3 remains to be the most popular game for FPS, then I will continue to compete in Q3A tournaments.

WarMachine: Do you plan on living off professional computer gaming, or will you become a member of the work force?
Fatal1ty: Well there would be no reason to go to the work force and get a standard job as of right now with making $100,000+/year in gaming. With next years predictions, I should make approx. $200k+/year. So right now I'm working very hard to make a living in gaming and do my best to win more tournaments to come.

WarMachine: But what about long term, 40 years, 50 years down the track?
Fatal1ty: Well, with making this kind of money from gaming and so on, I might be able to retire when I'm 25 years old or so and play golf everyday, life off interest from stocks or mutual funds. But I will probably not retire from gaming for a long time. I think, if gaming gets bigger and bigger in the future, I could definitely become a very good coach and run my own web site for time to come. I don't see why I couldn't stay in the gaming community for the reputation. I would be like a Jack Nicolous to Golf or a Michael Jordan to Basketball if Gaming continues to grow.

WarMachine: Are u willing to answer config questions?
Fatal1ty: Not really. I will release my config in the future, but I plan on waiting for a while. I also work with Stomped.com on Quake3. I write tips + tricks and do other cool things with them and I will also mention some parts of my config in writings I do for Basic Configs or such.

WarMachine: Ahhh. Fair enough. What about hardware? What mouse and mousemat do you use?
Fatal1ty: I use the Razer Boomslang 1k, and I have a very nice system from Compaq which is a 1ghz. I use a Printer Pad for my mousepad.

WarMachine: Are you one of the sacrifice good looks for easier sight. Or do you like the game looking at its full potential?
Fatal1ty: I sacrifice good looks for easier sight of the player. It just makes it easier to see the enemy and its just how I've always played.

WarMachine: Do you think of yourself as a team player when playing with cK, or just like a hired gun? A type of "Rambo" if you will?
Fatal1ty: I'm a very serious team player. I can play both sides of the field. If you want me to go play Rambo, I will and I will win. I showed it several times in different situations throughout the tournament at Frag4 which saved us the game sometimes. But other times I will sit back and work the enemy so my team gets frags and such so they focus more on me rather than my team. So sometimes I play a decoy in the match cause there expecting me to come in and actually I have czm right behind them killing them all. Ouija and Spook are also great teamplayers and are very intelligent. They just know how to work together and preform very solid.

WarMachine: Yer, I noticed in an NB game that you could have played more dominant but you laid back and held the RL very well. In one instance, Gauntleting 3 players.
Fatal1ty: hehe, ya. It hurts my efficiency, but it helps the team in the long run and that is what teamwork is all about. You can't be the dominant force all the time, cause then the enemy would specifically focus on you instead of the rest of your team.

WarMachine: Are you the only 1v1 player in cK?
Fatal1ty: Pretty much. czm plays some 1on1, but I'm not really sure if he's serious about it or not...

WarMachine: I noticed on the cK web page the large amount of players that cK has. Do other clans have this same feature, is there a specific reason for this?
Fatal1ty: Well, we have a big ammount of players for inner clan practicing. Some of the players that you see are not all active members of cK. Some play CS or UT also. But we do have about 8 or so active Quake 3 players that inner clan with us. 8 or so many members including us 4 starters.

WarMachine: So who are the 4 starters? Is the team ever altered for the important tournaments, or are the others just used for back-up?
Fatal1ty: Mostly just back-up at the moment. spook, czm, ouija and myself are the starting 4 and hopefully in the future we can get Gemini back in the groove so he can play in more tournaments with us. Also we have a Coach who is cK-orb and does an extremely great job with coaching us during the match.

WarMachine: That's another issue that I've seen, are many other teams employing coaches, and how is this being accepted on the "pro" level? Are there any teams against this new concept of a coach?
Fatal1ty: No one is against it, it just brings a new aspect to the game and gives the team with a coach a better advantage. Just like having a coach in Tennis or whatever sport, it's always better to have a coach who is demanding more and more from you rather than you setting your own goals.

WarMachine: I've also heard (from a CH-AU article) that players are now using their real names as nicks. Have you started this same concept?
Fatal1ty: Well, I was using john-cK-wendel` for sometime on irc, but the idea kind of died away and we're still waiting to see how we can bring this into gaming without so many problems. A lot of gamers are unknown and we don't know there real names if they changed it. Some people like Makavelli, Thresh, & myself would get by barely, but still, many gamers know us by our nicknames and not our real names.

WarMachine: Do you think that pro gaming will provide enough money in the future for people who aren't ranked No. 1? So people like in Tennis, who are ranked 200th, still earn enough money to sustain a decent income.
Fatal1ty: I think with next years event, more people will be able to make money doing it, but I think it will be rounded off to where only the top 128 players receive money or maybe only the top 64 players in the tournament recieve money. It will be hard for people to make a living off the game, but if they can finish top 8 or so at every event, I believe they might be able to get some kind of money to live off of.

WarMachine: Do you think there will be any chance of a gaming circuit? Like in car racing etc
Fatal1ty: I don't see why not, if companies come together to form teams or to form a circuit of gamers, I think it will be very attractive to the public and to other gamers to see there top gamer go at it during the tournament. I watch Golf all the time, and my primary goal is to see Tiger Woods play and I'm sure that would be the same for other gamers out there who are my age or younger of even older adults who are attracted toward gaming to see me or others. It could be done really easy right now with a dominant 128 players already in the tournaments today. I definitely could pick out the top 128 gamers of the world and say, hey these are the best right now and if they don't perform in tournaments, we can always go back and look in the minors for better gamers if they didn't suceed after a couple of tournaments.

WarMachine: Well.. that should about do it. Thanks for your time, and good luck in the future.
Fatal1ty: Hehe, Thanks man. I would like to say thanks to Razer and stomped.com for making my gaming career a little easier.
