Druzli Interview (2000)

Druzli
Interview Conducted By: Agent & Decker on 11/18/2000

Agent & Decker: Can you tell us about yourself? The usual name, age, where you live, hobbies, etc.
Druzli: My friends call me Gsti, but my real name is gst Atlason and am 28 years old. I live in small country far away from all called Iceland and my hobbies are pc and photography. On the pc I map and play CPM :)

Agent & Decker: What type of gameplay did you have in mind when you created Up Close and Personal?
Druzli: A fast paced duel map thats very up close and personal.

Agent & Decker: Did you decide to make it for CPM before you started it?
Druzli: Of course ;)

Agent & Decker: So you put in trick jumps from the beginning?
Druzli: Yes, I wanted to do a map with doublejumps.

Agent & Decker: What makes you want to create maps for CPM?
Druzli: The gameplay, which makes fast games and trickjumps, which are cool :)

Agent & Decker: What made you decide to go with a "1 room" type approach where everything is visible at almost all times?
Druzli: So the game can be close and the enemy can't hide... action all the time.

Agent & Decker: Do you think there will be a lot of strategy on the map or more close combat fighting?
Druzli: Both actually, but I had a good player (n1-xfoo) to put items in places so I think it played out great.

Agent & Decker: What players would you like to see play on this map?
Druzli: n1-xfoo and ven0m. I would like to see them on it. Those guys can fly.

Agent & Decker: Do you think an aggressive player will do well, a strategic player or one who is both?
Druzli: Aggressive is good on this map I think... dont know about the strategy :)

Agent & Decker: What suggestions did your playtesters make?
Druzli: A lot, like item placement... n1-xfoo did that job with style. Khaile helped too... he asked me if I could add more rl ammo, and he was right.

Agent & Decker: Was the map playtested a lot before release?
Druzli: Yes

Agent & Decker: How long?
Druzli: Agent and Decker did a lot of those things. About 2 weeks I think.

Agent & Decker: How long did the whole map take from beginning to end?
Druzli: Not long, 2 and 1/2 weeks.

Agent & Decker: How do you go about starting a map? Do you draw a lot on paper or just start with q3rad and place stuff?
Druzli: I just open up q3radiant and start laying brushes and ideas come from that.

Agent & Decker: Will you be making any more maps specifically for CPM?
Druzli: From now on ill just make maps with CPM in mind.

Agent & Decker: Why do you think that so many mappers are attracted to mapping for CPM?
Druzli: I don't know actually.. Its very fun to make a map around this kind of gameplay, especially the doublejumps :)

Agent & Decker: What kind of texture sets do you prefer?
Druzli: I like gothic the most :) I'm not good at visuals though.

Agent & Decker: Any reason why?
Druzli: Easier I guess :)

Agent & Decker: Are you pleased with the look of the map?
Druzli: Not really :) I would like to be better at visuals, but I think it looks ok.

Agent & Decker: What games have you made maps for?
Druzli: Just Q3Arena... I started mapping about 6 months ago :)

Agent & Decker: How many maps have you done so far (up to this one)?
Druzli: 7 I think

Agent & Decker: How many are released?
Druzli: 4

Agent & Decker: Is this the first map made with CPM in mind?
Druzli: Yes

Agent & Decker: What made you decide to start mapping?
Druzli: I don't know... bad maps in Q3Arena I guess.

Agent & Decker: Would you say you are influenced by any other mappers?
Druzli: jude. I like his style and I'm not afraid to admit it :) He is my favorite mapper. Nice guy too. No celeb acts.

Agent & Decker: Is there a reason for including the 2 ya's, instead of lets say 1 ya and 1 ra?
Druzli: You will have to ask n1-xfoo that :) I just put in 1 ya at start...just the lower :)

Agent & Decker: Do you talk much with other mappers and share ideas etc?
Druzli: Yes I do, I talk a lot to Decker and Agent :)

Agent & Decker: Not counting your maps, which map is your favorite from CPM?
Druzli: Hmm... CPM1a and CPM5.

Agent & Decker: Any reasons for liking CPM1a?
Druzli: Yes, the item switching... more strats then regular CPM1

Agent & Decker: What about CPM5?
Druzli: CPM5 is a map with great connections, and the mh thingie!!! I love that one:)

Agent & Decker: What about CPM5?
Druzli: CPM5 is a map with great connections, and the mh thingie!!! I love that one:)

Agent & Decker: Do you play CPM a lot as well as map?
Druzli: Recently Yes

Agent & Decker: Have you started any new maps and if so, for what gametype.. 1on1, tdm?
Druzli: I have one almost finished for 1on1, and another one I dont like :) Im going to try and make a tdm map for CPM

Agent & Decker: What do you think is the biggest difference between mapping for CPM and vq3?
Druzli: Trickjumps, I love those trickjumps! Lets not forget the gameplay. You can make very fast duel maps.

Agent & Decker: Who is your favorite player and why?
Druzli: n1-xfoo is my favorite now! He's one hell of a player and I like his moves and weapon-combos... his weapon-combos are awesome.

Agent & Decker: Is there anything you would like to say to people thinking about downloading the map?
Druzli: Yes please... just give it a chance and play it for a while.

Agent & Decker: Anything else you would like to add DruZli?
Druzli: Just thanks to the CPM community! Very nice people there.

Agent & Decker: Thanks for your time DruZli and good luck with your future maps.
Druzli: Thanks guys and best regards from Iceland.
